Auto Show Reports Impressive Opening Weekend Numbers: Ticket Sales Over Last Year

Opening weekend for the 43rd Miami International Auto Show was a big hit with ticket sales up nearly 5 percent over those for the show’s first weekend a year ago.

For every hour the show was open during the weekend, box office sales were up for the corresponding period in 2012 with the exception of late Saturday night when a downpour drenched the area.

In football terms, you can say the show ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown.

In addition to the jump in tickets sold at the door, show organizers reported that the number of e-tickets sold through Sunday evening had already exceeded the figure for all of last year’s 10-day show run.

“That is huge,” said Rick Baker, President of the South Florida Automobile Dealers Association and the Show Manager. “The attendance for our first weekend reflects the comeback of the automotive industry as a whole, not just in South Florida but around the globe as well.”

Along with the hundreds of new cars and trucks arranged about the Miami Beach Convention Center floor for fans to inspect, including the national debut of the 2015 Cadillac Escalade SUV, show attendees also had the opportunity to drive selected models from manufacturers like Buick, Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, Chrysler, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Kia, Scion, Mazda and Toyota.

Jeep representatives reported that lines for people to get the feel of an off-roading experience at its Camp Jeep exhibit were “long and constant” throughout the weekend. At some point during the show, Camp Jeep will recognize the 1-millionth visitor to its popular touring attraction.

Before the show officially opened on Friday evening, automotive media from South Florida and around the country took part in a full day of press presentations that featured models from Aston Martin, Cadillac, Ferrari, Jeep, Maserati, Mazda, McLaren, Nissan, Ram and Toyota.

The Southern Automotive Media Association (SAMA) presented its annual awards, recognizing the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette as its “Star of the Show.” The Corvette also is the Official Show Car for the Miami Auto Show.

Other award winners were the Land Rover Range Rover Sport as best Utility Vehicle of the Show and the all-new Cadillac ELR as the Green Technology Vehicle of the Show. Ford’s performance simulator was recognized as the Best Interactive Display by a manufacturer.

Jaime Florez, President of the Miami-based organization, also announced that a new national media organization, dubbed the National Council of Automotive Media Associations, had been formed during meetings that morning.

“This was a great start to what will be a great show,” said Cliff Ray, Auto Show Coordinator.

“We know that South Floridians love their cars, and this is a wonderful opportunity for them to get a look at what is new as well as their old favorites.”

The show will continue its run at the convention center through Sunday, November 17. For more information, visit www.miamiautoshow.net.
